The most important things to know about me are that:
For 30 years I have been helping people reduce and resolve physical pain by combining my B.Sc Kinesiology, with therapeutic applications of breathing, yoga movement and yoga nidra.
Not only have I become one of the most recognized and “in demand” yoga therapists that helps clients get out of pain, my company Functional Synergy is also a leading professional training organization for Certified Yoga Therapists around the world.
What I do works so well because so much of the reasons for persistent physical pain lie outside of or under our awareness.
My most often spoken line is – “where the pain is is not the problem”. It is a signal or an indicator of limitation, and the actual issue is outside of awareness.
Since you can’t change what you aren’t aware of . . to actually solve the issue, we need to delve into exactly that… the realm of what you aren’t aware of.
“Susi’s approach appeals to people who are high-level and like things to be intelligent and straightforward.
Yes, you will learn how to use your body in a more functional and systematic way, but it is beyond just the body – Susi will make you aware of your own inner activities.
She is not a psychotherapist, but she will help you understand yourself, your body, symptoms and your movement without it feeling invasive.”
“Susi’s amazing. She used her skeleton to show me not only how these small little movements worked, but how my body was moving, and where I was compensating.
She also showed me how my brain recognizes these patterns and how that impacted my body movement and symptoms. And more importantly, how capable I was in changing those patterns.
The result – I had been living in chronic pain for 23 years and now I am not.”
Susi gives you permission to step back and slow down, because that’s the right thing to do. Whereas everyone else in fitness, body work, they want you to do more. To go to the physio, it’s like going into a torture chamber! So, you may be expecting to get the same extreme stretches, but you won’t.
As I moved more, and become more aware of myself, the more I recovered. It may sound daunting but it isn’t.You get to know your body and the way you respond. Things can change very quickly
In addition to my private client work, I am deeply passionate about training yoga teachers and health professionals who want the same results as I do.
Since 2001, my professional training company, Functional Synergy, has trained over 10,000 yoga teachers and health professionals how to integrate the approach I use. I’ve also certified more than 400 amazing therapists through my IAYT accredited Yoga Therapy Certification program.
I am the best selling author of 3 books – 2 that I wrote for yoga teachers (Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries and Therapeutic Yoga for Shoulders and Hips) and 1 for the desk Worker (Yoga for the Desk Jockey).
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with my husband Stew and our twin school-aged kids.
I love getting on my yoga mat, my bike, and strapping on a pair of skis and hitting moguls and powder.
And nothing pleases me more than sharing my love of travel with my kids. When at home, and not doing loads of laundry or avoiding stepping on lego, we can be found concocting some sort of baking soda with food dye kitchen science experiment (think foaming lava from lemons . . . )
